What is a Career?

What is a career?

Before understanding what career is, we must first understand what a job is! Job is something you do simply to earn some money. When you attain 18 years of age or when you complete your graduation or post-graduation, people ask you what job are you doing?

What is a career?

Everyone has to take up some job or the other to earn livelihood but if you undertake some job or the other just to earn money and live on that, it is not sufficient. If you go on changing your work or just to earn only money, you will not get any efficiency or proficiency in the job. This leads to say the proverb “Jack of all trades, master of none.” If you do one job today and another job tomorrow which have no connection to each other, you may earn money, but you can never make a career. You will not develop any skill in a particular job. That’s why a career is more important than earning money instantaneously.

Career is a work undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life with opportunities for progress. The progress and action would be taken by a person throughout a lifetime, especially those related to that person’s occupations. A career is often composed of the jobs held, titles earned, and work accomplished over a long period of time, rather than just referring a position. Career is a series of jobs connected to employment opportunities. The career provides experience and learning to feel your future. The entire body of work done as you moved from your first position to your current position. The career gives a sense of direction to our life by giving a purpose worth living and worth fulfilling.  Moreover, a career makes life meaningful. Achieving career goals and progressing in a career provides a sense of satisfaction to a person. It also helps attain an individual status in life and society. It also helps achieve certain heights in our day-to-day life.

Career fulfills basic human needs essential for survival. For example, a house to live, a family to look after, a good number of friends to live with, enough economic support to the family, and other basic needs.

Career develops innate capacities like biological, social, and cultural nature. The one who involves wholeheartedly in a career, his physiological abilities will be in peak performance. The one who does justice to their career will have great respect in the society. By the time one reaches the top position in the career, one will be attaining the cultural nature of the career to its peak. The one who is fascinated by the career will be able to adapt to environmental changes all over the world wherever they go. They could develop good relationships with customers. They gain a lot of goodwill amongst the colleagues as well as the authorities.

In this way, when one retires, they carry good health, relationships, goodwill and can remain happy till the end of the life and flourishes as an individual.
